Poi Workshops Sep 21–Nov 30
Posted Aug 24, 2010
Note: Posted as received.
Claire de Luxe's fall poi sessions start September 21. This season offers
Poi 1 as well as a Poi 3 class. Both are 10-week sessions, with the last class being a fire class. Yes, you will leave Poi 1 knowing how to spin fire!
Poi was an ancient Maori art used for dance, play, agility, and self-defense training. Today, poi has developed into a dynamic and complex art form that is often combined with fire. Here, poi is taught with an eye for movement as opposed to simply a series of static tricks to be mastered. Class includes warm-up and cool-down as well as plenty of opportunity for questions, improvisation, and experimentation. We will spin and move to a variety of music to encourage different styles and flow. We introduce and review basic fire safety methods, and the last class always includes the opportunity to light up (no fire will take place at Triskelion studios).
Poi 1
Tuesdays, 8:00–9:30pm
This class starts at the very beginning! We begin building a basic
vocabulary and getting comfortable spinning, moving, and working with
planes, stalls, and basic transitions. Come discover the joy of what
some find a movement meditation, others a flowing dance, and others a
fun and stimulating challenge.
Poi 3
Tuesdays, 6:30–8pm
This class will be focusing on movement, transitions, and experimentation. We will take the basic moves that you feel comfortable with, and expand them into new combinations, progressions, and sequences. We'll be working on adding movement to poi moves so
they become more than a static set of tricks. And we'll be exploring how to turn a bag of tricks into seamless flow. And of course, we'll learn some new tricks as well! This is the next level that advanced beginner/intermediate poi enthusiasts are looking for.
Up to two missed classes may be made up by attending the alternate poi
class. Refunds are not given once poi class begins.

About the Instructor:
"Claire Smith's poi teaching is nothing less than awesome. She's got a great knack for breaking down complicated moves so they're easily understandable, and she gets the sense of play that poi is all about. Her classes are a blast."
– Nancy Connors
"Claire is an EXCELLENT poi teacher. I was trying to teach myself by video and through friends and wasn't getting very far, but once I started taking her classes, my skills took off. Claire has a really clear way of explaining what should be happening with each move and can see right away why a trick isn't working. She works well with students of all levels. The mirrored studio also helps self-immensely. Claire is considerate and fun and I always look forward to classes."
– Crystal Thiele
"I really enjoyed the class. For a class that lasted only a few weeks we learned a lot of great moves, even some new ones I haven't seen before. The techniques were explained so well, that I was able to get down some things that I have been struggling with for awhile, like thread the needle. To top it off, we ended the course with spinning
the fire poi, and though a bit nervous, I felt prepared for it. Overall, the atmosphere was very friendly and relaxed, and everyone received individual attention from Claire.
She is great with poi and an excellent teacher. I look forward to taking the next class."
– Maria Marshall
"Claire's class is fantastic. I felt I was able to move at exactly the pace I needed. On days when I was lost she gave me just the nudging I needed to get it. On days when I was ahead she gave me lots of encouragement to keep going further. I ended the class with the skills to really spin fire! There was also a great emphasis on safety, which takes the issue of 'OW! My arm!' out of the picture. Thank for the sexy skill Claire!"
