"The little trick of getting three objects to dance around in your hands has always managed to keep a small sense of magic...It's one form of insanity we feel everyone has a right to experience."

Beginner & Advanced Poi Classes with Claire de Luxe

Note: Some people consider this juggling. It's definitely object manipulation. Descriptive text is from triskelionarts.org

CircusNYC.com - Poi Workshops Beginner I Poi With Claire de Luxe
Poi was an ancient Maori art used for dance, play, agility, and self-defense training. Today, poi has developed into a dynamic and complex art form that is often combined with fire. Over a series of 10 classes, we will practice basic poi moves and explore concepts such as planes, stalls, and transitions. Poi will be taught with an eye for movement as opposed to simply a series of static tricks to be mastered. Class will include warm-up and cool-down as well as plenty of opportunity for questions, improvisation, and experimentation. We will spin and move to a variety of music to encourage different styles and flow. We will also cover basic fire safety methods, and the last class, which will take place on a nearby Williamsburg rooftop, will include the opportunity to light up (no fire will take place at Triskelion studios).

The cost for the class is $180 for the 10-week session and includes a set of practice poi (sock poi) that I will provide for you to take home. Once your registration is confirmed by me, half the class fee ($90) is required to reserve your space in the class (which is limited to eight people). The remaining balance can be paid on the first day of class.

Tuesdays 8-9:30pm
Jan 5-March 10

Poi III With Claire de Luxe
In Poi III we will continue to expand our poi vocabulary by learning more moves. We will also be doing more experimentation with the idea of "flow," using the mirrors to see how our bodies and the poi interact, exploring partner poi and doubles moves, generating more transitions, and working on individual sequences and choreographies. This class will push you to become more adept at learning how to practice on your own and developing your own style.

Class begins in January. The last class, a fire class which will take place on a nearby Williamsburg rooftop (no fire will take place at Triskelion studios), will consist of a performance by each of you (which we will be working on over the course of the 10 weeks). If the scheduled date of March 10th is too cold, we will wait several weeks before going outside to perform.

Cost is $180 for the 10-week class and $90 is due upon registration, via check or Google Checkout. Let me know if you are signing up for Monday or Tuesday class.

Quotes about the Instructor
I just completed Claire's beginner poi class and am exhilarated after spinning fire for the first time. After the first class I never thought I'd be coordinated enough, but thanks to Claire's patience and natural teaching abilities I picked it up a lot quicker than I ever imagined. Claire breaks down each move into its basic components, and in the process makes what once seemed complex, simple. I can't wait until the next level course! ~Dave Shor

Claire teaches the art of poi spinning with incredible patience and understanding of her student's experience. She keeps the class size small in order to be able to give each student the individual attention necessary to reach his or her potential. She is able to explain technique, advise on practice strategies, and cover all safety information necessary to advance from sock spinning to fire. It is rare to find a teacher this dedicated to the success of her students. ~Amy Shapiro
