Join us for this FUN six-session introduction to the world and play of the
Clown!
What is stupid, laughable, or ridiculous about you? In this course, each
student will develop an eccentric Character Clown unique to them,
emphasizing honesty and ferocity. The playing field of the Clown is
failure. The mechanism of the Clown is delight. The Clown must be funny.
We will focus on the discovery of character through relation to others: be
ready to play!
This class is for students from all levels of experience. Although Clown is
a form of theatre, the study of the Clown is not only for those who wish to
perform Clown. It is an invaluable and necessary course of study for all
actors who desire to learn the true honest presence of the actor, and who
wish to develop a fierce ability to fully and profoundly respond to each
moment on stage.
Matt Chapman is a performer, director, and teacher of physical theatre and
clown. He is Artistic Director of the Brooklyn-based ensemble Under the
Table. Additionally, he tours internationally as an actor with Dell'Arte
International and has worked as a performer and teacher in Swaziland and
South Africa through Clowns Without Borders. Matt has taught at Vassar
College, Sarah Lawrence College, Towson University, Luther College, and the
University of Iowa. He has served as Assistant to Ronlin Foreman at
Dell'Arte International, and is currently a professor of Clown and
Improvisation at Manhattanville College in New York.
