Clowning for Actors with Hilary Chaplain
Posted February 28, 2006
Note: Hilary was featured in the 2002 Juggle This show. Since the workshop
says it's for actors, it may be appropriate for jugglers who want to improve
their comedic skills but don't necessarily want to work as clowns.
Come laugh at the beauty of your own ridiculousness. In this workshop we
will find the delight of a child, the vulnerability of the actor, and the
failure of a clown who is striving with all his or her might to maintain her
dignity in the midst of catastrophe. The work will involve both solo and
partner work exploring relationships to the audience, to your partner,
status, pleasure, and enjoying failure. The exercises are designed to
discover a true sense of pleasure and joy in play.
Hilary Chaplain has been seen at the Festival International de Pallasses in
Andorra, Carcajada 2005 in Buenos Aires, the Filo Festival in Londrina,
Brazil and the Hong Kong International Faust Festival. A founding member of
the New York Goofs, Hilary has appeared with them in venues such as Carnegie
Hall, Lincoln Center, and at the Wolf Trap with Bob of Sesame Street. For 8
years show an adjunct professor of clowning at New York University's Tisch
School of the Arts (since 1994), and has also been entertaining children in
NYC hospitals as "Nurse Nice" of the renowned Big Apple Circus Hospital
Clown Program since 1987. Hilary was an original cast member in Bill Irwin's
Largely/New York, and appeared on Broadway in the New York Shakespeare
Festival production of The Tempest, directed by George C. Wolfe. She played
a featured role named Hilary in the film Forrest Gump. Bill Irwin said of a
recent performance, "She brought down the house with veteran clowns hooting
in the wings!"
