"The little trick of getting three objects to dance around in your hands has always managed to keep a small sense of magic...It's one form of insanity we feel everyone has a right to experience."

WORKSHOPS back

Pig Iron Workshop in New York City - March 5-13
Posted February 26, 2005

Note: Geoff Sobelle is half of All Wear Bowlers, currently at Here in Manhattan and receiving smash reviews. See details here.

Pig Iron Theatre Company presents:

Generating Material: Inspiration, Improvisation, and Composition

A workshop that invites you to experiment, fail, succeed, fail again, and perform.

In this 16-hour intensive, Geoff Sobelle and Sarah Sanford of Pig Iron Theatre Company introduce theatre artists to the generative tools at the heart of the Pig Iron process. Students will be given the chance to develop performance skills such as spatial awareness, rhythm, physical character, and improvisation, and then immediately apply these skills to the creation of original work. Challenging and rewarding, this class is meant to jump-start the creative engine and provide skills for any theatre artist's ongoing development.

Starting from chosen source material, we will perform exercises to awaken themes, identify styles, and create specific worlds using our bodies in the space. An image or phrase will be mined for its evocative power, resulting in anything from a gestural vocabulary, to a fully embodied character, to a realistic scene. Emphasis will be placed on the artist's imagination, sense of play, and risk.

By the end of the class, students will be well-versed in several of Pig Iron's collaborative tools and will have generated short pieces for in-class presentation. As a group, we will discuss when something "works" and when it doesn't, and make suggestions as to the next step of the creative process.

DATES: March 5, 6, 12, 13
TIMES: Saturdays and Sundays, 12pm-4pm
COST: $225
LOCATION: TBA (in Manhattan)
