New Name for Carmine Street Gym
Posted November 7, 2004
On Monday, October 4, 2004, New York City's Parks and Recreation Department officially changed the name of the Carmine Street Gym to the Tony Dapolito Recreation Center in honor of the late "Mayor of Greenwich Village," who died last July the day before his 83rd birthday. Mr. Dapolito was the city’s longest serving community board member, logging 50 years on Greenwich Village's Community Board 2. He was 12 times board chairperson, during the other times serving as chairperson of Board 2's Parks Committee.

So far, at least, the consensus appears to be that while the venue has changed its name, the juggling club has not: Carmine Street Jugglers lives on -- we just meet at the Tony Dapolito Recreation Center. And since it was never on Carmine Street anyway, maybe it'll be easier to give people directions now.
