Artmedia News
==================================================

Welcome to the November edition of the Artmedia physical theatre newsletter, a publication with an Australasian focus and a global perspective, now reaching more than 15,000 subscribers worldwide.

First up, our apologies to those who tried to respond to last month's issue of the newsletter, and got a bounced response, this happened because the last issue was sent out from Ottawa with a non-existent Canadian 'reply to address'. Some other subscribers won't have received the last issue because their spam filter caught it.

If you or your friends have suddenly stopped receiving the newsletter, suggest that they adjust the spam filter to enable mail from artmedia. Often the way we send the newsletter, say from different addresses, or addressed as 'to undisclosed recipients, is used by spam filters as triggers to try and recognize spam, and the newsletter gets put in the junk mail.

I am back in Sydney, fresh from the wilds of North America, which was of course wonderful, and we say hi to those who have gathered in Baltimore for MotionFest this week, and also to those here in Australia who are fresh from the RichMix training project run by Circus Monoxide in Wollongong last week.

Circus Monoxide are arguably Australia's most innovative physical theatre company, having already spawned the very successful director of the Australian flagship company, Circus Oz, so catch Monoxide's new double-decker bus with its 'Swiss army knife stages' and the physical antics that goes with it, whenever you get the opportunity.

This month we welcome as sponsor the CircoArts training at the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology in New Zealand, 'a dynamic establishment that has a great deal to offer students working towards a Diploma in Circus Arts', and we recommend their training program.

The sponsors and feature advertisers in each issue are covering the costs of sending this newsletter to you at no cost, so please patronize their activities, and also take the opportunity to use future issues of this newsletter to promote your own work, at very reasonable rates.

In the Features this month, one of Australia's ground-breaking companies, Rock 'n' Roll Circus, seeks both a new member for their troupe which is based in Brisbane, and also an Associate Producer, while Red Spoon presents a 'Clown Theatre Intensive', also in Brisbane, and the Port Fairy Folk Festival seeks Street Acts for their event in Victoria.

While in Playspace news, I promote my Clown Summer School in Sydney next February, and unveil a new four month Clown School for the middle of next year.

In the Networking we have a New Zealand focus this month, with information on the 1st Improv Festival in Auckland, the 12th New Zealand International Juggling Festival to be held in Taupo, and on the NZ International Comedy Festival, held in both Auckland and Wellington.

In America we have information on the Bindlestiff Family Circus who are seeking Vaudeville Acts in New York, and also on applications to perform at next year's San Francisco Fringe.

You will have to move quickly on two of the UK items in this issue, as interest in performing at Bradford's Cabaret and Revue must be notified by tomorrow, and applications for the Puppet Centre Trust Bursaries by the beginning of next week. Welfare State International is also seeking participants for Creative Alchemy, a multi-media storytelling project.

We also have some festival announcements from the KultNet site in Germany, a report on the 17th World Dance Congress in Naxos, Greece, and information on the International Festival of Capoeira, which starts next week in Bogota, Columbia.

We conclude the clown debate that we have been running for the past few months, by broadening the discussion to America, and to the growth of the clown art form there. Here in Australia, the campaign to make the curriculum at NICA more clown-friendly, turned nasty recently, with one of the commentators in last months issue loosing his job as a result of his post, and talk of balkanizing the industry. It all comes out in the wash, and we did our best.

In the Noticeboard section, the Children's Theater Development Centre, in Prishtina, Kosovo, seeks contacts, the Amphitheatre of the Arts, from the UK, seeks a tour of Australia, and, for those who have been following the clown debate, we have a review of David Bartlett's new book 'The Clown Star'.

And finally, in an update on the Australian National Circus and Physical Theatre Association, which some readers may remember were advertising for a new Executive Officer a few months ago, this position has now been filled, and Catherine Oddie is the new exec, and she is based at the Judith Wright Centre in Brisbane. The Judith Wright Centre is trying to position itself as a centre for Circus and Physical Theatre and their office is down the hall from that of Rock 'n' Roll Circus. Find a link to the Circus and Physical Theatre Assn site under Resources at www.artmedia.com.au/links.htm

We aim to provide an avenue of communication for the growing physical theatre community, so please send us info for inclusion in this newsletter. Please also forward this to somebody else who may be interested.

===================================================
CircoArts at the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT), New Zealand may not immediately spring to mind when choosing a school for circus related performing arts, but this dynamic establishment has a great deal to offer students working towards a Diploma in Circus Arts.

It is fully dedicated to its full-time two-year programme students, with a mutually supportive culture that encourages a group approach to problem solving and imaginative devising, in line with the discipline required to reach and maintain a very high standard of skills in an individual's chosen field. Students appreciate the curriculum emphasis on each person being the creator of their material and having the use of dedicated facilities and equipment to train and practice their routines whenever they wish, outside normal teaching hours.

According to Godfrey Sim, Programme Leader, CircoArts attracts students from around the world who wish to learn their art in an English speaking school that has accessible entry requirements - students are chosen because they have the core ability and receive one-on-one training within the group dynamic to develop and strengthen their skills.

Students have the freedom to explore their diversity and individuality in training. The diploma covers circus skills, devising and performance, body training including exercise science, with history and comparative studies adding a further dimension. There is the opportunity for electives in year two with a course focus on both group production and individual acts, managed training programmes as well as business and risk management skills. Students emerge from CircoArts with the ability to deliver both in performance and business.

As part of developing a student's intelligent contribution to the devising process a professional director is employed to facilitate the devising and production of an ensemble theatre/circus show during Year 2 of the course. The participation in this production pulls together a wide range of skills accumulated by students during the course and reinforces the supportive culture that is a strength of CircoArts.

As the only school of its kind in New Zealand, CircoArts works hard to create a supportive community focus with programmes in recreation centres and schools, encouraging involvement in all areas of the community. With New Zealand's flourishing festivals being a natural source for performing there is plenty of opportunity for practice and employment.

If you would like to know more about training at CircoArts, New Zealand, take a look at our website: www.circoarts.com. OR email us at leec@cpit.ac.nz Note that late applications are open until 16th Jan 2004 and audition tapes in by Fri 23rd Jan 2004. The academic year starts Mon 23rd February 2004.

The Festival in Auckland will be curated this year. This means that acts wishing to participate in Auckland will have to apply to a Curatorial Panel. The Festival has matured in the past decade, as have NZ performers. We have been successful in providing an Umbrella platform for NZ Comedy, but we will be better able to support and develop the performers, shows, venues and the comedy going audiences by creating a festival that is exceptionally good rather than big. The Festival in Wellington will remain an open Umbrella Festival. Applications for the 2004 Auckland Festival are due in 6 weeks, on Friday 19 December. If you would like to discuss your show with us, appointments are available from Monday 17 November. To make an appointment, just get in touch with Kylie at the Festival Office (09 309 9241/ kylie@comedyfestival.co.nz). Campaign: Clown Categories to US Clown Association Competitions
==================================================

This month we conclude the clown debate that we have been running for the past few months, by broadening the discussion to America, and the growth of the art form there.

Here in Australia, the campaign to reform the curriculum at NICA to make it more clown-friendly, turned nasty recently, with one of the commentators in last months issue loosing his job as a result of his post, and talk of 'balkanizing the industry'.

So, together with a lack of movement on the promised clown forum, we see from this that the problems at NICA are endemic to the management of the organisation, and that stronger measures than public debate will be required to facilitate a change... It all comes out in the wash, and we did our best.

The following discussion occurred on the Yahoo group 'clowns' in the past month. "This forum is for the spreading of information about all aspects of clowning. For sharing experiences, both bad and good. To help each other to learn more about clowning. To allow each of us to become better clowns." To sign up to this yahoo group, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/clowns

"As much as I love Ringling, there's just something special about a genuine, canvas-covered Big Top circus. But, there can be too much reliance on tradition. After all, gas lights, wooden stoves and outhouses used to be traditional...as were horse-drawn carriages and spittoons. Let's cherish the traditions but look to the future of clowning. EVERYONE should write their respective associations (COAI, WCA, SECA, WCA, etc.) Today and Demand that changes to the rules requiring "traditional" full make- up, "traditional" clown personae, "traditional" clown costumes, etc. for competitions and coaching sessions be changed to accommodate the spreading popularity of the Euro clown, minimal make-up & costume image... which has a far older basis in tradition than the bright (and beautiful) American clown. At the very least, it should be brought to a vote of the membership or made a dominant platform for future officer elections." Skip the Clown. Find a link to Skip's site under Clowns at www.artmedia.com.au/links.htm

"Rather than changing traditions within the organizations, I think it would be nice to see recognition of the progression the art of clowning has made. Looking at other disciplines like singing. The Grammy awards did not stop offering awards for popular categories but rather added new ones, so now there is an award for Best Country Album or best Rap, or hip hop or gospel, or contemporary christian or new age. I would say that maybe the respective associations could add a free style, European, modern, traditional, etc categories to their competitions and coaching sessions." Yours in Christ, Bob Smith, aka Handi the Clown,

"This is a good idea that ought to reach the right ears. It just makes complete sense. Instead of trying to shove everyone in to a pigeonhole slot, let this thing grow and do something about advancing everyone. I know a lot of ruffled feathers that would get smoothed with a move like this, starting with me. It wouldn't mean abandoning tradition, it would mean advancing new changes and giving everyone a shot to shine ... now, go make sure the powers that be hear this !!!!" Honeybunch

"Dear all, The Center for Children's Theater Development in Prishtina, Kosovo, has a mission for developing the children's theater in region, by focusing its educative and social role. We would be very grateful to get in contact with similar centers, or foundations that are interested to support these kind of projects in our region. For more information about our Center and our project "Theatre for children-art and education", please contact us via e-mail, and I hope that we will hear from you soon." "Hello Mr Clay; our first show kathak meets circus, can be performed with 5 to 8 performers, depending on budgets. We have very little cargo with us, and we can adapt from street performances under a rig, to theatres or bigtops. Our work is very theatrical and political, it would also be appropriate for events like the gay pride as the main story is a gay love story in the air, although a straight love story travels parallel with it. Amphitheatre of the Arts wishes to raise awareness of "New Circus" as an art form whilst exploring social issues, in combination with cultural art forms, creative circus skills and educational programmes for the wider community. The performance is accompanied by visual theatre, circus skills (Vertical rope solo & duo, straps, trapeze and juggling), and contact movement. We would like to know if there are any openings for our work to be booked in your part of the world." best regards, JM Akkerman amphitheatreofthearts@btopenworld.com

"Book Review - David Bartlett - The Clown Star - Five Points To Guide You Toward Continual Progress - Pub. 2003 If you have any ambition to be better clown, entertainer, or person, this book will help you find the areas you need to work on. David is exceptionally clear about how to become the best you can be. He's spelled it all out. Right here. And he's right. One of my favorite parts is the 7 Levels of Laughter. David talks about the audience's reactions from smirks to guffaws to ... well, you've got to read it. His explanation of how to move the audience from one level of laughter to another is one of the best approaches to explaining a comedy entertainment that I have read. Warning - Reading this book will make you think. If you are just starting out, if you are good but want to get better, if you are willing to do the work but are not sure what to work on, get this book. Highly Recommended. Soft Cover, 1/2 Size, Perfect Bound, 183 Pages." Tom Myers. Get this book from the T. Myers Magic Web Store, and find this link under Resources at www.artmedia.com.au/links.htm
