Two Upcoming Cirque Boom Appearances
|
September 4, 2003 |
|
Note: Cirque Boom is a relatively new local circus-themed theater company.
The Kitchen event will be Saturday, September 13, from 2 - 5:00 pm.
Dear Friends:
Cirque Boom is gearing up for its new season and has lots of news to
share!
You are cordially invited to attend Cirque Boom’s first two gigs of the
fall:
a.. "Pride" rears its hilarious head at Six Figures’ Artists of Tomorrow
Festival! On September 12th at 7pm and September 13th at 8:30pm, Cirque Boom
clown Anna Zastrow will whip Upper West Side audiences into shape with this
winner from the Circus of Vices &Virtues 2003. Location: West 86th St
Church (West 86th between Broadway and West End in Manhattan). More
information at www.sixfigures.com. (More Cirque Boomers are also featured in
Kate Magram’s "Awake My Heart" at the same festival— check the web site for
dates ×).
b.. "Divine Carriage," featuring Dick and his two Virtues, will grace
The Kitchen’s Fifth Annual Neighborhood Street Fair. Dick will channel words
of wisdom from above and distribute them—in scribbled, sticky form— to the
public. The Kitchen is located on 19th Street between 10th and 11th Aves in
Chelsea. More information at www.thekitchen.org
c.. Watch for Cirque Boom in the Village Halloween Parade again this
year!
Spring and Summer 2003 proved productive, exciting &enlightening for
Cirque Boom:
a.. "The Circus of Vices &Virtues 2003" ran at The Brooklyn Lyceum for
four weekends in March and April. The Brooklyn Free Press called the show
"Bizarrely Appealing," the Brooklyn Papers described it as "graceful" and
"hilarious" and noted Critic Jonathan Kalb instructed prospective
theatergoers to "Forget Cirque de Soleil... All intelligent people craving a
springtime dose of circus should head for Cirque Boom's wonderful new "vices
and virtues" piece..."
b.. In June, Cirque Boom collaborated with Waxfactory—a theater company
known for its use of installation aesthetics and new technologies—on
Ladyfromthesea, an adaptation of Ibsen’s classic play, commissioned by the
International Ibsen Conference. In the service of art, the lovely and
amazing Cirque Boom Aerialist Leah James Abel spent many hours exploring the
ins, outs, ups and downs of a giant seafaring net—which was hung in the
stairwell of Brooklyn’s American Can Factory by Cirque Boom rigger Mark
Simmons—and encased in plastic.
c.. In July, Bond Street Theatre’s Michael McGuigan contributed his
stilting and theatrical genius to a reprise performance of "Greed" at the
Summer Seminar of the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics at
NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. In addition to joining him on stilts, Anna
Zastrow gave a great clown performance in "Pride" and Olivia Lehrman outdid
Vanna White as Zastrow’s Virtuous Assistant.
And finally, what you’ve all been waiting for: a completely new production
is in the works. Slated for March 2004, The Hoffmann Circus will be based on
and scored by Jacques Offenbach’s 1881 comic opera The Tales of Hoffmann.
Cirque Boom welcomes all potential collaborators, performers, supporters and
spectators to send us an email at cirqueboom@hotmail.com. Venue, dates, and
times are yet to be confirmed and will be posted on our web site
(www.cirqueboom.org) and through subsequent e-newsletters.
All the very best,
Ruth Juliet Wikler
Artistic Director
