Editorial Note: Jugglers and other performing artists sought for non-profit workshops.
Art Start is an arts-based youth development non-profit that profoundly
impacts the lives of New York City's underserved young people. Since 1991,
Art Start has provided free multi-disciplinary arts programs for the city's
homeless youth, teenagers living on the street or coming out of prison, as
well as for young people simply struggling against economic brutality,
devastated families, racism, and a crumbling education system. We believe
the arts have the capacity to allow our young participants to rise above
hardship by replacing frustration and instability with a sense of
accomplishment, confidence and direction. As we have found over the past
twelve years, art is the starting point of a process; the medium through
which change takes place. Providing opportunity where restriction lives, the
arts guide our participants to connection, skill-building, trust,
determination and hope.
Over the years, a roster of over seven hundred volunteer artists along with
Art Start's program directors have contributed a great deal to our four
award-winning programs: Arts in the Shelters Program, Mentoring Project,
Media Works Project and Hip-Hop Project. These artists bond with Art Start's
participants, listen to their needs and connect them to the creative process
whether it is painting a mural, performing a song, or producing a short
film. To date, Art Start has given over 7,500 young people the chance to
find their voices in a supportive and safe environment. In fact, many
participants now refer to Art Start as the "fam." Art Start looks out for
the best interests of underserved young people by connecting them to the
contacts, resources and tools that provide them with genuine opportunities
to change their worlds, and ours, for the better.
In our Arts in the Shelters Program, we work with volunteer visual and
performing artists developing different workshops in two homeless shelters
in New York City. As Program Coordinator, I am trying to improve the quality
of our Performing Nights workshops and I think having a juggling workshop
would be really good for our children. Our workshops start at 7:30 p.m. and
last an hour. I would be really happy to find volunteers for this. We are
closing the workshops during August, so this could start in September.
Please feel free to contact me for any further information or if you think
you would need visual materials from us, like a brochure or our reel.
Thank you so much for your support!
Take care,
Chio Flores
