AYCO Festival 2003:
Expanding the Ring: Youth Circus in America

The American Youth Circus Organization's Festival 2003 will be hosted by St. Paul's Circus Juventas in its spectacular new permanent big top August 22-25, 2003. AYCO Festival 2001, hosted by Sarasota's Sailor Circus, made history as it established friendship and cooperation between teachers from around the world and young people involved in American circus. It was called "a remarkable achievement", "an assuring demonstration of how effectively the youth circuses of America are nurturing circus skills and instilling, in the process, a love for circus itself", and "an embarrassment of riches." The excitement generated during the first festival will be renewed at this time when circus is becoming more significant in the cultural, educational, and recreational lives of young people.

The American Youth Circus Organization, established in 1998, is a non-profit organization promoting the participation of youth in circus arts. AYCO Festival 2003 will inspire mainstream educators who want to bring circus into their classrooms, circus professionals who want to connect with the next generation of audiences and performers, parents who want their children to discover challenging, non-competitive activities, and kids who want to spotlight their talents. AYCO Festival 2003 is for youngsters already participating in circus programs and for those not yet participating.

AYCO Festival 2003 workshops will address the needs of classroom teachers, circus educators, circus kids, and the general public. There will be experiential workshops featuring innovative approaches taught by over 25 of the country's foremost circus artists and educators. Interactive sessions will examine community relations, fundraising, using circus to bridge economic, social and cultural differences, alliances with schools, and other topics.

At AYCO Festival 2001 Circus Juventas' directors Betty and Dan Butler, who had just opened their 21,000 square foot facility, led a workshop, "If You Build It, They Will Come." Now people from around the country will be coming to Circus Juventas for AYCO Festival 2003 - Expanding the Ring; Youth Circus in America. The Festival's two gala performances will spotlight youth circus participants from around the country.
