"The little trick of getting three objects to dance around in your hands has always managed to keep a small sense of magic about it...It's one form of insanity we feel everyone has a right to experience."

Mask Movement Juggling Acrobatics Music Dance History Theatre Commedia Dell'Arte

Hovey Burgess, Julie Goell and Stanley Allan Sherman are combining their teaching, performing, acting, directing, writing and mask making talents to give students a firm grounding in Classical Commedia Dell'Arte. Teaching collaboratively, these three master teachers offer an integrated Commedia program of masks, music, physical comedy, dance, acrobatics, rhythm, stage fighting, slapstick, history, juggling, lazzi, improvisation, scenarii (scenarios) and more. Students learn the physical style of Commedia Dell'Arte as it was "then" and how it may be used "now" as a creative tool for actors, performers and directors. Enlightening, guiding and instructing students in Commedia Dell'Arte is our goal.

Comments from students after taking the weeklong session at the "Celebration Theatre Barn":
"It is not just about Commedia but developing skills for acting and connecting honestly with moment-to-moment impulses in improvising and in performing. I am going to recommend you to all of my students and colleages."
-Professor Judith Chaffee from Boston University (classical theater program) after taking the summer session.

"Thanks ever so much for your Commedia Dell'Arte workshop at the Celebration Barn Theater. Although I've taken a number of Commedia Dell'Arte and physical theater workshops previously, your Roving Classical Commedia University has all of my past experiences beat by far. I can assure you, as a result of my participation in your workshop, what I do personally with Commedia and what our Commedia Dell'Arte troupe does from now on will be completely transformed..."
-Glenn Russell Pasta Shock, a Philadelphia based Commedia Dell'Arte Troupe

"...I have adopted the "Doctore" character and although this mask I made since I got home is a little more on the cartoon side than the Commedia side (its' blue!) It is still very much a "Doctore character and very French! I've used him to introduce a number of keynote talks I've been asked to do at health conferences. He (and the character is definitely a he - wearing a doctor's coat) He is a lot of fun and warms the audience up to "what is next" Thanks for your patience with us."
