"The little trick of getting three objects to dance around in your hands has always managed to keep a small sense of magic about it...It's one form of insanity we feel everyone has a right to experience."

Clown Workshop and Private Sessions with David Larible
April 20, 2004

World Famous clown David Larible, "the Prince of Laughter" and SLAM Present
"Serious Clowning: A Workshop Series" David Larible is considered by the international critics as ‘the world’s greatest clown’. He was born in Italy in a 7th-generation circus family, with roots in the Commedia dell’ Arte tradition. As a child, David learned acrobatics, dance, roller-skating, trapeze, horseback riding, juggling as did other comedy greats like Chaplin or Keaton. He shared his life with the greatest circus and variety performers of 20th century, speaks five languages and plays seven musical instruments.

In the late 80s, David developed a classic silent clown character inspired by the tradition, that led him to win the Monte Carlo Circus Festival in 1999. He was then called to the United States to be the first clown headliner in the history of Ringling Bros. & Barnum & Bailey Circus, where he is still performing. At Ringling’s, David is the only performer in the world to entertain 20.000-seats arenas without speaking a single word. David has performed in circuses in Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Scandinavia, Switzerland, Spain; at the Royal Carrč Theatre in Amsterdam, at the legendary Tower Circus in Blackpool (UK) and in the glorious Cirque d’ Hiver in Paris. He was the first western clown ever to perform at the Bolshoi Circus building in Moscow; performing in China he received an honorary Golden Lion award at the Wu Quiao Art Festival; he presented his one-man stage show at the Theatre Princesse Grace of Monaco, the Teatro Goldoni in Venezia, and the Festival of Contemporary Circus in Brescia. He lectured at the Biennale in Venezia, and in 2002 he was honoured with a special event at the Los Angeles Institute of Italian Culture.

In his workshops, David presents the classic clown traditions and their links with the Commedia Dell' Arte, as been transmitted to him by his family tradition. His teaching is based on intuition and observation, to generate the same universal comedy language that was the same root for the great silent movie clowns.

In a series of improvisations, attention is put on the importance of the body to generate the motivations and reactions at the basis of classic comedy. David’s lessons-- conversations are full of anecdotes about a clown life around the world, and of detailed descriptions about the nature of clowning, the specifics of clown acting, historical roots, costume, and make-up. All of his teaching is not based on books or theorized methodology, but only and uniquely on family heritage and a life-long, worldwide performing audience.
