[Dear %1%|Dear Juggler]],
Welcome home if you were with us in Winston-Salem, and if you weren't, start planning now for 2008.
More than 20 past and present Carminers converged at what many agreed was the best IJA ever. The NYC presence was, as always, loud and strong: Carminers performed, competed, vended, led workshops, judged, and built a gorgeous tobacco-themed lounge to celebrate the heritage of the host community and piss off the rest of the juggling world.
A few NYC contributions deserve special mention:
- Bindlestiff Family Cirkus and the Carmine Street Jugglers co-sponsored a tobacco product manipulation contest, at which 10 competitors showed tricks with cigar boxes, cigarettes, and cigarette papers. The top prize of $250 was won by Ed Hughes from Philadelphia, who split it with JuggleNYC's own Cynthia; she took a few puffs from a cigarette through a tube he ran through his sinus cavity--ewww!!
- The IJA created a special prize, the Award of Innovation, to recognize four phenomenal acts, among them Sean Blue. Sean also won the gold medal for solo rings juggling
.
If you have any festival photos you're willing to share, please let us know, and we'll try to put something up on the site (or post your own links on the Message Board).
You may notice this newsletter is a bit later (and thus longer!) than usual, but we've got a great excuse: Webmistress Cynthia was busy completing her degree requirements and has just graduated from the New College in San Francisco with a Bachelors Degree in Theatrical Clowning- one of the first four clowning degrees ever received in the country! Way to go, Cyn! Maybe now she'll come home? (She wishes she could.)
Finally, we don't usually tout specific shows, but this one deserves it: SHOEBOX, SHOEBOX, SHOEBOX!
Check out the links on the right for some hot fun in the summertime, and stay tuned to JuggleNYC.com.
Happy juggling!
Viveca & Cynthia
