  Cirque du Monde Seeks Program Coordinator Aps due May 26

The cirque program coordinator is responsible for the coordination of the Cirque du Monde workshops in collaboration with the director of arts and education by upholding both the mission of Cirque du Monde and of The Point. The cirque program coordinator may be an instructor-coordinator role.

The Point Mission Statement:
The Point CDC is a non-profit organization dedicated to youth development, and the cultural and economic revitalization of the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx. We work with our neighbors to celebrate the life and art of our community, in an area traditionally defined in terms of its poverty, crime rate, poor schools, and substandard housing. We believe the area's residents, their talents, and aspirations are The Point's greatest assets. Our mission is to encourage the arts, local enterprise, responsible ecology, and self-investment in the Hunts Point community

Job Responsibilities:
  • Act as a liaison between Cirque du Soleil and The Point
  • Act as a liaison between The Point and the Cirque du Monde coaches
  • Design, implement, and evaluate the social circus program in collaboration with the director of arts and education and the youth program coordinator
  • Coordinate the team of instructors hired by The Point to run social circus classes
  • Initiate, educate, and train at-risk youth enrolled in the Cirque du Monde program
  • Coordinate all local trainings and convening meetings
  • Carry out specific mandates, such as enriching the pedagogical material, training instructors, or other tasks
  • Commit to at least two days a week on-site year round at The Point.
Tasks:
  • Schedule/oversee weekly classes for students enrolled in the Cirque du Monde program/convening instructors to these classes
  • Monitor timesheets/paychecks/budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility
  • Work directly with the director of arts and education to develop theme-based copyrightable social circus curricula that tie in with or are complimentary to educational themes used throughout The Point
  • Oversee program deliverables such as student presentations and opportunities for students to attend professional circus shows
  • Attend bi-weekly managers meetings at The Point
  • Organize and follow-up on class preparation
  • Draft and submit activity reports, documentation (video and photography), and bi-annual narrative reports for Cirque du Soleil and for The Point
  • Participate in outreach and public relation activities (tabling at events, participating in local events, contributing to media bites) on behalf of Cirque du Monde/The Point
  • Fill specific equipment needs, maintaining equipment, maintaining records
  • Develop knowledge of issues facing youth by sharing expertise of social workers
  • Facilitate attendance of students/members of the community to Cirque du Soleil shows and/or facilitating social circus workshops with Cirque du Soleil shows
  • Facilitate/co-produce on-site social/environmental justice circus theater production performances by or for students, as well as for the greater Hunts Point community
  • Other tasks as needed
Qualifications:
The applicant for the cirque program coordinator position should be a circus artist or gymnast with a circus background:
  • Excellent abilities and skills in both administration and management (specifically in team coordination and collaboration) with at least two years experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Mastery of a minimum of two circus techniques and the ability to teach these techniques (i.e. aerial: silks, trapeze, lyra; clown; acrobatics; trampoline; contact and club juggling)
  • Five years experience working in the circus arts
  • Ability to teach and work from an asset-based approach
  • Mastery or training in youth development or social work or social community projects
  • Mastery or training in conflict-resolution, compassionate communication, or non-violent communication techniques
  • Excellent ability to inspire, motivate, organize, and lead successful teams
  • Trained in one or more acting techniques
  • Ability and experience in coordination with various institutions such as: community organizations, companies, and non-governmental organizations
  • High-school diploma or equivalent
Assets:
  • Willing to acquire or perfect complimentary circus techniques
  • Bronx-based preferred
  • Bilingual, Spanish speaking preferred
  • Charismatic personality
  • Knowledge of NYC school systems a plus
The cirque program coordintator reports to The Point's director of arts and education and Cirque de Soleil's social action coordinator.

Part-time position:
15–20 hours per week
Minimum 10 hours per week program coordination
