First Annual Buskers Banquet
Posted November 15, 2004
Note: The following is directly from the P.S.122/SCHOOLHOUSE ROXX email.
We would like to invite you to participate in the First Annual Buskers'
Banquet at Performance Space 122, Friday November 26-Sunday November 28.
The Buskers' Banquet is an indoor festival of New York City street
performance with proceeds benefiting members of the street community.
The festival is produced by Schoolhouse Roxx, an ongoing staged-concert
series held monthly at Performance Space 122. Performances are at 9pm.
The event will be catered by Project Renewal, an organization dedicated
to renewing the lives of homeless men and women in New York City.
Project Renewal's Comfort Foods program provides training experience for
Culinary Arts students and jobs for program graduates while offering
low-cost, nutritious meals to shelters, drop-in centers, senior citizen
centers and other not-for-profits.
Fiscal sponsors will be arranged to raise money to cover the costs of
the catering service and to provide additional funds to Project Renewal.
We hope to find at least one corporate sponsor who will match every $10
ticket sold with a $10 donation to Project Renewal.
Artists will share 40% of the ticket income for the night. The space
can hold up to 100 people. We hope to book 7-10 artists for each night
of the festival. Each artist will present material that is 5-10 minutes
in length.
Our goal is to work with a variety of established artists renown for
their street performance work (i.e., Bread and Puppet, Circus Amok,
Living Theatre, etc.), avant-garde street performers, and many as-of-yet
"undiscovered" street/subway artists. A gallery installation of artwork
by individuals who promote their works on the street and in subways will
supplement the performances.
Our hope is that the Buskers' Banquet will become an annual festival,
always taking place across Thanksgiving weekend and eventually branching
out to include more venues and garner high profile critical attention.
Please respond as soon as possible if you are available. If you know
fellow street performers who would be interested, please feel free to
invite them to contact us.
Thank you,
Travis Chamberlain

P.S.122 presents SCHOOLHOUSE ROXX!
"Amped-up entertainment maxing out the speakers in your brain."
SCHOOLHOUSE ROXX, doors at 9pm., Tickets $7-$15.
SCHOOLHOUSE ROXX is Performance Space 122's new late-night music and
performance series. At the end of every month Producer/Curator Travis
Chamberlain (of The Fabulous Entourage) brings you an original
cutting-edge rock n' roll spectacle, inspired by the twisted
imaginations of your favorite local bands, avant-garde musicians, and
performance artists (dancers, directors, spoken word artists, etc.).
This original series provides a unique venue for bands and musicians to
develop the more presentational aspects of their vision and produce
fully-realized staged concert events. Every performance concludes with
a party! For more information, please visit www.ps122.org/sroxx.
SUBMISSIONS: SCHOOLHOUSE ROXX is currently accepting submissions from
bands, musicians, guest curators, comedians, dancers, directors,
performance artists, and other innovative talents. We highly encourage
artists (and more specifically, bands and musicians) to propose concepts
for a fully staged event that encompasses their unique creative vision.
Please note, however, that all SROXX engagements must incorporate live
music while seeking to expand the boundaries of live performance (that's
our mission, after all). SROXX focuses on bringing together artists
from various performance genres--whose work shares si! milar visions--in
order to create unique fully-staged events every week. Nightly
performance slots may vary in length from 1-60 min. for musical acts,
and 1-25 min. for non-musical acts. Serial formats and excerpted works
are considered, but all performance forms are accepted. Quick set-up and
strike is advisable, but not mandatory. A willingness to tailor ideas to
producer's needs can be a BIG plus, but also not mandatory. Propose what
you feel is appropriate. New work is encouraged. Dangerous visions are
preferred. Loud ideas are necessary.
BANDS AND MUSICIANS: Artists such as Lou Reed, Jeff Buckley, They Might
Be Giants, Loser's Lounge, Antony and the Johnsons, and Blue Man Group
have all performed their music at P.S.122. SCHOOLHOUSE ROXX is currently
accepting submissions from bands, musicians, and other innovative
music-based talents. Nightly performance slots vary in length from 1
min. - 60 min. for musical acts. Quick set-up a! nd strike is advisable,
but not mandatory. P.S.122 has a fully operating sound system, but no
back line. All guitar players must bring their own amps, which can be
used as pre-amps if necessary. Keyboards, acoustic guitars, and other
synthesized instruments/machines can be fed through direct inputs.
Drummers should bring their own kits. Microphones will be provided.
Professional sound mixing and lighting effects will also be provided.
Appropriate submission materials for all artists MAY include: Video, CD,
DVD, photos, texts, press releases and press clippings, raw ideas, etc.
Be sure to attach a brief description of the work or works you are
proposing for consideration.
Please mail your materials and ideas ASAP to:
